Well, guys and dolls, I thought I knew what I would post on tonight but I was thrown a curve ball and had to rethink what the day meant. The word that encompasses all that transpired is Balance.
Balance. You know, I hear that more and more on a day to day basis. Our diets are out of balance. Our lives are out of balance. WE MUST ACHIEVE BALANCE!
*sigh* So what exactly are we doing that's out of balance? Too much / too little of any one thing. Take your pick: food, sex, TV, work, friends, yada yada yada . . .
Like the wheels on our ride, if "things" are out of balance, we get the wobbles! Something doesn't feel right. We know it right away, but why so slow to act? Christ where do we begin? When? We are so busy just getting through the day . . . and before you know it, weeks, months, and years go by and we are wobbling more than ever.
Take a look at the image. Spring, Summer and Fall had their turn. Now it's Winter's chance. Balance.
But wait! What about global warming, you say?! Yes, I know that is the perfect example of our earth being out of balance. Let's save that for another post.
I am referring to a smaller scale today. One that I can present as reachable.
Now where was I . . . wobbles . . yes. When we get the wobbles, we often reach out without knowing it. It starts as a groan, builds up to a whine and before we know it we are in full bitch mode! Our friends and family voice their observations and sometimes we listen, but most often we just need to vent.
And that's alright. Venting prevents explosions. But, in the grand scheme of things, venting is good as long as the process doesn't repeat.
So how do we get around this? We first need to recognize that we are out of balance and why. Not an easy fix because, by nature, we like to be comfortable. Often times, quick, easy comfort band aids suffice (taco or burger shaped) but that can still leave us out of balance and possibly adding to the wobble.
The only thing to do is to STOP. Stop the activity that has created the imbalance. Yes there's work involved but ignoring the problem won't make it go away.
With me, I have to consciously walk away from my many [unfinished] projects and give time to the two fur babies who wait so patiently at home. They don't have opposable thumbs to open doors or turn on faucets so they wait for my help. They don't ask for much. Ball play or being taken for a walk will make their day. But when I get busy and their situation is wobbling, they vent by helping themselves to a book off of the shelf or a magazine that looks like a good chew . . . I call it 'itchy teeth'. When they feel frustrated and out of balance they chew . . on whatever . . . So I get upset but recognize their need and help them get their balance back. I love it when my dogs smile!
So how is your balance situation? Engine humming nicely? No wobbles from the wheels? Well, what can you do? Take it slowly, one issue at a time until the adjustment is correct.
Sometimes the balance needs to come from within.
Sometimes it's between you and another.
Take a deep breath. Clear your head and listen. Listen to that inner voice.
. . That piece of cake may be covering for stress that should be addressed. .
. . Instead of walking away and not talking to the other person, start the conversation . .
. . Instead of seeing what you don't like in the mirror, notice what you do like and say it out loud . .
Balance. Yin and yang. Hot and cold. We all need it. Or else we wobble.
Here's to not wobbling! (holds up a cup of coffee)
Cheers,
Me
